lang 84 revealed on pitmasters The three finalists, Rod Gray, David Bouska and Lynnae Oxley got a very big surprise when they stood before the judges waiting to hear what they would be cooking. Judges and barbecue legends Tuffy Stone, Myron Mixon and Melissa Cookston told the contestants they would be cooking a whole hog. Not only that, but because the hogs are so big, they would be cooking their award winning entry on a Lang 84 BBQ smoker® (lucky them!).

The news was met with concern by Rod Gray and David Bouska who had never used a Lang BBQ smoker®, but Lynnae Oxley was joyous at the news. She never cooks on anything but a Lang BBQ smoker. Her response? "I've cooked on a Lang for years. I would trust no other".

whole hog sectioned for BBQ Pitmasters Told there would be 5 sections on the hog that the judges would choose from including ham, jowl, shoulder, loin, and belly, they learned no one would know which 3 would actually be judged until seconds before the judges tasted them. Each contestant knew that cooking a whole hog while maintaining temperature overnight was a definite challenge. All 5 sections had to be perfect and all 5 sections had different widths and different thicknesses – a true barbecue challenge.

As the contestants readied their cookers, Ben Lang, the man himself, creator of the reverse flow offset technique, arrived to assist the two chefs who had not used the Lang BBQ smoker® before. Not only was the cooker unfamiliar to Rod and David, but they had to decide what kind of wood to use. Rod chose Pecan and David chose hickory and cherry. Ben answered all their questions on firing up and preparation. Later, David Bouska told his assistant to "keep the doors open, Ben Lang said 'leave em' open' and he's the man."

Just when things seemed to be moving along, the judges threw another roadblock into the mix. The finalists were told to pick a slab of ribs and then to cook them one perfect bite. They were also told they could use their own smoker cookers for this part of the contest. Can you guess what happened? David and Rod went back to their other cookers and Lynnae stuck with her Lang BBQ smoker®. After tasting all three entries the judges announced the winner. It was Lynnae Oxley who was cookin' on a Lang.

Now right about now you might be thinking that the contest was unfair because Lynnea had such experience on her Lang BBQ smoker®, but the rest of the story proves that winning barbecue, even when you have never used a Lang BBQ smoker® is possible every day because the winner of the 2013 Pitmasters Grand Champion Finale was none other than Rod Gray who had never used a Lang BBQ smoker® before in his barbecue career. Congratulations to Rod and the great whole hog he cooked on a Lang BBQ smoker®.

congratulations 2013 BBQ Pitmasters Grand Champion
